Gebel Kamil - IRON Meteorite, UNGROUPED ATAXITE, 6.9 kg
Gebel Kamil is an iron meteorite discovered in 2009 in Egypt's East Uweinat Desert near the Sudanese border. It is classified as an ungrouped ataxite, notable for its high nickel content (~19.8%) and lack of a Widmanstätten pattern due to its fine-grained structure.
Like many Gebel Kamil meteorites, this example exhibits a fine grained texture on the surface that resembles leather or hide. This pattern is unique to Gebel Kamil meteorites, and is part of what makes them so aesthetically pleasing.
This example has outstanding provenance, having been in the collection of Robert Haag for many years. It can be found in his 2020 Meteorite Catalog on Page 9.
